Our own Bay Area Christian therapist Sik-Lam Wong, LMFT, has been collaborating with Prof. Selma Yznaga of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Prof. Shadin Atiyeh of Wayne State University to work with migrants and refugees using the Flash Technique. His teammates are presenting a webinar to share about their work with recently arrived migrants at the Texas border, as well as resettled refugees from the Middle East in southeastern Michigan.
The Flash Technique was developed by Dr. Phil Manfield as a recent innovation of EMDR, to process trauma in a way that focuses on safety and minimizes abreactions such as dissociation. Sik-Lam has created simple protocols to apply the Flash Technique to vulnerable populations in group and individual settings around the world.
About the Webinar
Treating Trauma with Migrants and Refugees: The Flash Technique
Migrants and refugees represent diverse groups facing various challenges that mental health practitioners can address. The flash technique is an accessible, evidence-based, and low-intensity intervention that can relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress. An overview of the impact of migration and the challenges associated with mental health service access will be presented. Dr. Atiyeh and Dr. Yznaga will share their experiences working with recently-arrived migrants at the U.S. southern border and resettled refugees from the Middle East in southeastern Michigan. The webinar will discuss their use of the flash technique, as well as cultural and ethical considerations.
